Darling Girl Eyeshadow Review and swatches

Continuing my ongoing huge Darling Girl review  I've got a bunch of eyeshadows for you today!

 Darling Girl eyeshadows come in three sizes, samples (1/8 tsp in bags), petites (1/4 tsp in jars) and full size (3/4 tsp in jars) 

As I've never actually finished a shadow I only buy samples and petites, so I can't show you the full sized packaging:

    

Eyeshadow packaging is again simple and clear. Sample bags are labelled with the ingredients, name and whether or not they're lip safe. The jars do not have room for the ingredients, but they are on the website. Darling Girl is well known for making awesome taupe colours with a twist but they also have some great bright and dark colours!

In the following photos I am wearing Dasher on my bow bone, Jewelled Taupe on my lid and a touch of Rudolph in my crease. This was applied on a bare lid (no primer)

So as I hope you can see the shadows stayed amazingly well! There's a tiny bit of fading in the crease but other than that it looks the same as when it was first applied! The slight change in colour is due to the different lighting.

Conjurer Cosmetics: Eyeshadows Part 1

One of my Birthday presents this year (I turned 24 in January) was a distance learning course about making your own makeup. For a few years now I've played around making some eyeshadows and lipsticks and things using premade bases but this is the first time I've ever made my own from scratch and it is so so much fun! I just love playing around with all the powders and waxes and oils and pigments, it reminds me of how, when I was a little girl, I would make 'potions' by mixing loads of spices and various things from the cupboards together into a big horrible slurry, only with this I get pretty stuff at the end! 

Conjurer Cosmetics is my made up makeup company (based on my love of magicians and secular magic and stuff.) I'll be reviewing the actual course later on when I've completed all the modules. The first module is actually lip products (my favourite!) but I'm sharing some eyeshadows (from Module 2) with you first because there's more pictures to share at the moment. When taking these swatches I stupidly forgot that I own a light box so they're not the best.

These were (nearly) all made using the very basic base recipe from the course. First these shades are made using only Mica for the colourant:

 

Left to right:

Odd greeny taupey colour with reddish sparkle, green with gold shimmer, very sheer gold with a hint of violet sparkle

 

Sparklypinkish purple, multicoloured sparkly blue, blue with a red duochrome

 

My favourite colour, a gold with a slight green tint and a strong red duochrome.

These were using only oxides:

  

red-brown, deep amber, cream (hard to see as it nearly matches my skintone)

 

These are all pinks and lilacs increasing in depth of colour.

These were also using only oxides but I added some Titanium Dioxide which made the formula smoother and more opaque.

And these are using both oxides and Mica's

 

Sparkly rusty red (has a weird blue shine in the photo, it's not there in real life), light grey with gold sparkle.

None of these shades have names because they're just experiments with no fixed recipe.

My next project is to try and perfect an eyeshadow base. The recipe that came with the course is actually very good but I just want to see if I can better it :)

Eccentric Cosmetics swatches and review

Disclaimer: I was sent these products to review. However all thoughts are my own, this is a completely honest review.

I was sent these samples to review way back in the summer last year I feel absolutely terrible for not being able to write this sooner. Basically it's just been one thing after another! First of all I was trying out the products for a while. Then when I went to make swatches I discovered that the bag of samples had gone missing. When i eventually found it weeks later I took my photos, put them on the computer and in theory could write the post, it was the late autumn and, if anyone remembers, I sort of disappeared in then, only posting a few times a month (if that), not commenting on others blogs and so on. Then when I finally got my act together and was up to posting, the computer died.
Excuses, excuses, I know. I genuinely feel terrible. But anyway, there's nothing I can do now, so let's get on with the review!

Honestly when Anna contacted me and asked if I would review her shadows I wasn't sure I wanted to. The colours on the listings looked, quite frankly, dull. The colours all seemed to have a slightly dusty look about them. But I realised that i didn't actually have any of these neutral,  dusky colours, so i decided to give them a shot.
And again when my samples arrived (packaged nicely in a bubble mailer with handwritten note, candies and a lovely lipgloss as a present) they didn't really excite me. They all do just look a little drab in their baggies. But bizarrely when you swatch them something magical happens! The colours look much, much prettier on the skin! More complex, brighter, less grungy. For instance the colour 'Autumnal Crush' looks like a quite boring, matteish pale brown in the bag. In fact it looks like a flat brown oxide. But when you wear it it becomes a lovely dark, orangey gold colour with shimmer.
Now don't get any ideas, these aren't eye-searing bright colours, they are definately (for the most part) neutrals, but they're all really pretty and a lot less 'dusty' looking that the Etsy pictures or baggies appear.

Can anyone see what I mean about them looking 'flatter' in their bags than in the swatches.

As you can see, these shadows are not super complex, no multichromes for instance, but they're still lovely. I love complex colours of course, but that doesn't mean more 'simple colours' are bad in any way. Having said that, it would be nice to see some different finishes to the shadows. All of them had the same lightly shimmering finish, so it would have been nice to see some matte for instance.
These colours are most definately not repackaged.

My favourites are Wrecked Metal - a lovely aqua,  Hard Sun - a shimmery peachy, coraly, goldy colour and Dry and Dusty, Weathered Stone and Autumnal Crush - all goldish, sandy colours that make a fantastic Pin-up look when worn with black winged eyeliner.

I tested these for a while and found that I really liked the formula. They're smooth as butter to apply, blend beautifully and last for a really long time! I wore these all day once, without primer (I never remember to wear primer even though I own a few and know how much difference they can make!) and they lasted about 5 hours without fading, creasing etc. After 8 hours (when I went to take off my makeup) they had creased where my eyelid crease is, and faded a little, but it still looked alright. Very impressive. When I came to take them off the removed easily with makeup wipes.
Each sample is a 1/4 of a teaspoon (which is quite a lot, will last for many applications), in a small zip-lock bag with the name and ingredients.

So in conclusion I really liked these eyeshadows. While generally I prefer brightly coloured shadows, these are really lovely and make a lovely wash of colour, they're easy to apply and blend well. The only negatives I can think of are that they all have the same finish and it would be nice to have some brighter colours in with the neutrals.

You might have noticed that I'm using the word 'neutrals' very widely in this review. I can't think of a proper term for it. I mean they are not brights, but all the words that are antonyms have negative connotations like 'dull'. They're not dull, they're just... not bright!

I have just checked and I don't know what is happening but Eccentric Cosmetics has no items for sale in their etsy shop. I really hope this is just a temporary thing as they were really good products and she really didn't deserve to fail. And more selfishly, because I want full sizes of some of the products!
Because of this I can't tell you prices/sizes or information like that. Hopefully the shop will reopen and I'll keep you informed if possible.

BFTE Cosmetics

I was contacted by the lovely Crystal from Beauty From the Earth cosmetics to see if i wanted to try any of their products. Did i Ever! 

Again please believe that any reviews of these products will be entirely truthful and not sugarcoated in any way because i recieved the items for free. 

I have had a soft spot for BFTE since I first heard about them which was when the scandal about Lime Crime's repackaging was found out. It turned out that BFTE had been repackaging but didn't realise how it would upset people. When they found out they instantly apologised for any upset they caused anybody, reduced the amount of plain micas they sold and relabeled them all as 'primary pigments' so people would be aware of the fact. This seemed such a good, sensible way to deal with the problem, admit it and apologise and learn from your mistake. It made them seem quite trustworthy.

BFTE sells hundreds of multi use minerals (mainly used as loose eyeshadows) the vast majority of which are unique, original blends, as well as foundations, veils and blushes, lip glosses, primers and some false eyelashes and brushes and other supplies. Their website is really professional looking iwith tutorials, before and after looks and more. Their prices are competitive for an indie, mineral makeup company (for instance $6.50 for a full jar of shadow, $2 for a sample jar, £9.99 for a lipgloss etc). 

Anyway Crystal asked me to send her a long list of products i'd like to try and she would choose some to send to me. So, assuming i would be sent just a few samples, i went to town creating a long list of choices. Really long! My parcel arrived a week or so after i sent my email and was shocked to see that they had sent me basically everything i had said i was interested in! Of my ludicrously long list only a few items were missing. I couldn't, and still can't, believe the genorosity!

Illamasqua Week - Powder Eyeshadow Review

This is one of the hardest reviews i've hard to write because... well i just don't know what to say about these eyeshadows. They're not bad at all, but then they're not amazing either. I personally find it hard to compare eyeshadows to other brands because unless you have the same basic colour the colour, finish etc is going to be variable on purpose. By this i mean you could buy 2 peach shadows and one could seem much more pigmented and bright, but maybe that's just because the lighter one is designed to a paler colour.

Anyway these eyeshadows come in tonnes of colours (there must be over 100) ranging from pale neutrals to near neon so i'm sure there's something for everyone. The majority of colours are matte but there are a few shimmers too, I'm actually pleased about this as i love matte shades and the majority of brands seem to favour shimmery or pearly shadows. They are £15 each and you get 2g. They come in the same exact packaging as the cream eyeshadows, so i'm not going to bother describing it again :)

 

Firstly i have 8 of the shadows but bought them second hand from Rhamnousia so got them for £6 or £7 each, instead of 15. The colours are (from left to right)

As you can see some of the colours are not very bright, but this is because i chose some pale colours boardering on neutrals as i honestly don't have any in my collection. When used in looks they certainly don't look dull, they are actually quite pigmented, they just don't look it here (if that makes sense)

I also bought (this time actually from Illamasqua at full price) the Dystopia collection palette in Pink Smoke which contains Quantum, Matter, Synth and Rasp shadows. This cost £29 and you get 4 shadows at 1.5g each. As a single shadow is 2g for £15 i think this is pretty great value. Illamasqua used to make custom palettes where you could choose any 4 of their cream or powder eyeshadows for the same price as this. I loved this idea and, after going a-swatching a few months ago, i had a list of colours i wanted to make into several palettes but sadly before i could order mine they discontinued the custom palettes. If anyone from Illamasqua happens to read this PLEASE consider bringing them back.

 

 

 

The packaging is basically the same as with the single eyeshadows only giant and without a window in the lid. Instead it has a really nice big, good quality mirror. Again i really like the packaging, it's very sophistiated and yet has a bit of an ususual, slightly gothic 'edge' with it's shiny black plastic and curved sides. One problem i have with it is that it doesn't say the colours of the actual shadows, it just says 'Pink Smoke' which is the name of the palette. This has caused a problem in actually knowing which colour is which.2 of the colours in the palette (Rasp and Quantum) aren't available seperately, Synth is and it's easy to tell which colour it is as it's a pearlescent white colour, Matter is on available seperately too but it is one of the 2 greys in the palette so i can't figure out which is which. I just have guessed that 'Rasp' is the pink shade because it hints at 'raspberry' but i might be completely wrong. And then out of the two greys i've just decided 'Quantum' is the lighter one and 'Matter' is darker as on the website it describes it as 'gunmetal'.

Now for the quality of these. Personally i think they are great. They blend wonderfully, the mattes are just as blendable as the shimmers and i have no problems with them at all. The wear of them is great, on me even without primer, these last all day without any creasing and with very little, if any, fading. The shimmery ones do have a little bit of fall out but nothing terrible. I really like the colours i have and, while they aren't the brightest eyeshadows around, they are well pigmented and very very pretty.

So would i repurchase? I'm not really sure to be honest. The eyeshadows are fine, wear well, blend brilliantly, and are very pretty colours. However they're not really particularly unusual and honestly i don't think they're worth £15. I might purchase again if i find a colour that's really new and different, or if they have a sale. I do, however, really like the shadows i've got, i certainly wouldn't discourage anyone from buying them as they are good quality in my opinion.

Illamasqua Week - Cream Eyeshadow Review

Illamasqua sell both powder and cream eyeshadows, as well as loose pigments. I own a selection of the cream and powder variety (review of the powders is coming up). Their are fewer varieties of cream shadows than powder, currently there are only 14 cream shadows available. They retail at £15 for 2g. The cream eyeshadows i bought were from Illamasqua's end-of-line sale so they were half price at £7.50 and i got 7 colours.

The colours are beautiful and what you see in the box is what you get on your skin. The formula is lovely and... creamy :P Soft and silky and highly pigmented. It's easy to sheer out or apply heavily for a brighter colour. They have a slight sheen (stir is shimmery, the others aren't) but it's not very noticeable.

They come in the same packaging as Illamasqua's powder blusher, only smaller.

I've said before what i think about the packaging, so i won't say it again. The reason my pots are so messy in the first photo is because i've been applying the majority of these with my fingers, and i'm a clumsy and messy person. I applied Outcast with a blush and you can see it's nice and tidy :)

Now onto the wear of the products.

Freshly applied over eyeshadow primer and set with powder. Stir on browbone, Midas on main part of eyelid, Outcast as eyeliner.

After about 5 hours.

As you can see, even with primer and powder to set, the colour on the main part of my eyelid has faded and creased like MAD. The eyeliner colour has faded a little, but it's ok and the highlight colour on my browbone looks about the same.

So would i repurchase? Hmm i'm not really sure to be honest. There is only one colour left (Amour which is a gorgeous duck-egg pale blue/green) that i really like and honestly i think £15 is too much for a product that creases so badly. If they were discounted i might think about buying more. They make a good eyeliner, and may well be good for other parts of the face, but it is sold as an eyeshadow and i personally don't think it's great for that use. The colours i have are gorgeous but i don't know how often i will wear them simply because they fade and crease so badly :(

Sugarpill Cosmetics Review

I've been a fan of Shrinkle's for a long time, i own several items from her clothing line, and have always enjoyed reading her blog posts because she seems like a genuine, fun loving, sweet girl. She introduced me to Kryolan makeup and I always giggle at her blog posts detailing her love for Ron Perlman and grow lustful at the photos of amazing food she often posts (and yet remains so trim, damn you Amy!) and i've really liked her bright, colourful style and tranny/clubkid/80s rainbow brite girl makeup. So when i heard she was working on her own makeup line i was obviously really excited. I was sure that Amy would be taking the Kryolan she sells as her inspiration and creating something even more bright and beautiful.
And i was not disappointed.

A week of Indie Makeup Day 6 - Aromaleigh

Ok, here we are, the review of the Big Daddy of the indie mineral makeup world! Aromaleigh have been selling natural beauty products on the internet for over 12 years now! They were founded by Kristen Leigh Bell who remains the company president and creative director. Kristen was also the founder of the Mineral Makeup Mutiny (http://mineralmakeupmutiny.wordpress.com) a group which celebrates small cosmetics companies who create authentic handmade cosmetics. I find this a real hint towards the brands personality, that they are happy to advertise other mineral makeup companies who would be competition. She also only awarded Aromaleigh the Mutiny badge after she had sorted through all the requests from other companies.

Aromaleigh make basically every sort of makeup you could wish for: lip balms, lip sticks (both sheer and opaque), concealers, face lip and eye primers, foundations, finishing powders, blushes, bronzers, cream and powder eyeshadows and eyeliners, glitters, brushes, perfumes and various other bits and bobs. Samples are available on any powder product. Ingredients are included on each product as well as swatches and descriptions to give you a really good idea of the colours. It is easy to get in contact and they also have a forum.

Their prices are fair, they depend on the collection the products are from as well as the products itself. You can expect to pay less than $16 for a full 8g jar of foundation, $15 for a 7g blush, $8 for a 5 gram jar of eyeshadow and $7 for a lip product. These prices might be a bit pricier than some of the other companies i've reviews, but you get more product and a lot of the products are cheaper than what i've cited as well as them having costant sales on various items. International shipping is very fair, you pay a set price, sample orders up to $75 or all orders up to $40 pay $7.40 for insured mail anywhere and $14.40 if your order is over $75 (you can choose to buy non-insured mail and that would be cheaper).
All orders come with 3 free samples which you can choose yourself! With my order i also recieved a free sample of lip balm.

I ordered so many colours i can't swatch everything now, and i only tried eyeshadows but i have another haul coming with some other face products. I didn't try the lip balm either as i didn't like the scent (it was sugar plum fairy which smelled like cinnamon and spices which i don't like. I gave it to Claire who likes the smell but i don't know if she's used it yet) some of the other scents sound delicious. The order came prettily wrapped in tissue with an Aromaleigh sticker and invoice all within a bubble mailer.



I bought tonnes of Sonic Rocks eyeshadows, some samples and some full jars and then a lot of samples of other collections.

The samples are all 1/16 of a teaspoon, which doesn't sound like much but will certainly be enough for several applications no matter how heavilly you apply. The full jars come absolutely packed up to the sifter in fact i had to take the sifter out first because there was so much product it had compacted down and would not come through the holes. The quality of the shadows are absolutely amazing with amazing colours and finishes, great blendability and are really long lasting.
I did have one small problem though, as i said i took the sifters out of a lot of the jars and doing this i discovered that two of the colours were not fully blended. There were some little lumps of unblended pigment.





It was practically impossible to photograph this problem. I haven't actually used either of the colours yet so i'm not sure if they will look so streaky it will be a problem. The blue colour did streak when i swatched them but the coral didn't. However this was 2 colours out of the 30-40 i bought so really not a big problem at all :)

Would i purchase again? Well i already have :) And i really really want to try their foundations and get some more of the Rocks makeup which i love. They have a mind bogglingly large selection of products and colours of great quality and they seem like they really know their stuff. Kristen is a friendly, fun woman, who is fair and friendly to her competition (unlike some people who shall remain nameless), their prices are fair and i was overall really happy with my experience purchasing from them.

Yesterday me and Claire's order from Sugarpill arrived (we often buy makeup together so we can get twice as much but pay half each :P) and we were so, so excited i just had to show you as soon as possible. I wore the shadows yesterday (no picture because i did my makeup in a huge rush and it wasn't a very good look, but i did a video so you can see the shadows on me when it's up on youtube :)) and they were fantastic, so so bright and easy to apply and they lasted at least 10 hours without creasing or fading. However as i've only used it the once i don't want to write a proper review yet, but wanted to show you the amazing packaging and colours and give you my first impressions.

We made our order around the 13th of feb, which was a pre-order time, so orders didn't start getting shipped for a while, but as our parcel arrived yesterday it took less than 2 weeks from ordering for it to arrive anyway :) And here is the parcel:

Inside everyting is wrapped in pink tissue paper and arranged beautifully:

Can you see how wonderfully everything fitted together? I don't know if it's a coincidence or on purpose, but all the products slotted together perfectly, so they couldn't move around during shipping. Also there was no waste of a box too big for the products (i'm talking to you here Mac!).

Our order came with some gorgeous free stickers, an invoice with personal note and Amy was amazingly generous and gave us a free full size shadow! :O Claire was really happy because Amy's note mentioned a necklace she bought from Claire once i her note. It's little things like this that make a big difference.



Here is our invoice with our lovely glittery free Sugarpill Stickers (Claire is thinking of putting one on a scratch on her laptop), some business cards and the thank you note.

We picked up all of the pressed eyeshadows, 3 of the loose shadows (+ our free 'sample', a free full size pot of loose shadow) and a pair of her eyelashes. Shiping is free anywhere in the world on orders over $75 and at the time we ordered there was a 15% off sale. Our order came to $105 in total (we paid half each). All the single shadows are $12, the eyelashes are $8 and the eyeshadow palettes are $34.

Now onto the packaging, which is absolutely stunning. Each product comes in an absolutely gorgeous box, and then the product themselves are in gorgeous custom jars and compacts. And this packaging is really high quality too, the cardboard palettes are really heavy duty, the plastic jars are thick and the logos are printed on, not just stickers.

The lashes themselves. These are the 'Dewdrop kisses' lashes and have beautiful little crystals on the hairs. Sugarpill stock another pair of lashes too, a more regular cat-eye pair.

Next the pressed eyeshadows. We bought 2 of the palettes which contain 4 shadows each but cost $34 instead of $48 (single shadows are $12 each) so you're effectively getting a free shadow and $4 off :) Sugarpill offer 9 pressed shadows and the two palettes we got, Sweetheart and Burning heart, had 8 of them!

There is another palette, Cold heart which includes bulletproof, Tako, Poison Plum and Afterparty.

Now the Chromalust loose shadows. We bought Asylum, Tiara and Goldilux and we recieved Magpie for free! These jars are BIG for $12. Seriously you don't get a 5 gram jar of shadow, you get 5 grams of shadow!
