 About a week ago my friend Mikey played a gig where all the proceeds went to the Frank Sidebottom statue fund. Frank is one of my heroes so I was very happy to support the cause. However I was very stressed and anxious and we ended up having to stay right at the back of the bar the gig was in for the whole night with me trembling at the sight of the audience :( Still we could just about see Mikeys wig jiggling around over the top of the crowd.

In memory of Frank I tried to make my makeup as cartoonish as possible.

Stamp Out Prejudice, Hatred and Intolerance Everywhere

Four years ago 20 year old Sophie Lancaster and her boyfriend were savagely attacked and left for dead simply because they looked 'different'. Sophie later died of her injuries.
What a disgusting tragedy.

I'm sure anyone hearing Sophie's story would be deeply saddened and horrified by it. Unfortunately it is not an isolated incident. Personally I've been on the recieving end of both verbal and physical attacks because of my appearance.


While it's really very little consolation, at least from the ashes of the tragedy a phoenix of hope has risen in the form of the SOPHIE charity. The aims of the charity are to educate people that, no matter what culture you belong to, people are just the same inside and to stop what happened to Sophie from ever happening again.

I just wanted to write a very quick post to wish luck and send my love to anyone being affected by the Hurricane. I really hope everyone is safe and secure. x

Born Pretty Dotting Tools

After my previous review of the Laushine cracking polish the lovely people at Born Pretty offered to send me another item to review. As I'm getting more and more obsessed with my nails I chose this set of dotting tools to try my hand at some simple nail art.

Again my package arrived very quickly, in just about a week. The tools were packaged in a little plastic sleeve and then a bubble mailer, and they arrived safe and sound.

The set costs $4.74 and contains 5 double sided tools so there are 10 differe nt sizes all together. The sizes range from quite big (I'd guess about 3mm in diameter) to a tiny pinprick size. Some of the differences between the sizes are very small, some making dots that were identical to my (rather undiscerning) eye. The handles are made of some sort of sturdy resin and very pretty with the marbled pink and white swirl design (They also come in a multicoloured set). They're just about the perfect size in my opinion as the handles fit perfectly into my fist and I can hold them like a pen. 

I've never actually used a dotting tool before but it's so simple even a complete buffoon like me can do it. You just dip the 'ball' into your choice of polish, press it gently onto your nail and you're done! I did find that sometimes my little polish dots didn't come out perfectly uniform, but for the most part they looked neat. I've got quite shaky hands but I found the dots still came out quite evenly.  

Here I've used a different end of each tool on each nail to show all the different sizes:

I also found that you could use them to swirl polishes together for a very simple marbled effect. 

Here I put a blob of purple and gold polishes onto a purple base and then swirled it lightly using one of the smallest tools.

 

I used this technique on my Hot Lava mani as well.

That's No 7 Bobby Socks (discontinued limited edition polish)  with Models Own Lemon Meringue dotted on top using the 3rd largest tool.

I really like these tools, I can see myself using them a lot as I love polka dots and they're really easy to use but very effective. I do think that some of the 'ball' sizes you get in the pack are very similar to each other but I guess there's only so big you could make a working dotting tool and as you get ten different sizes for under $5 I  think they're a real bargain. You still get a nice variety of sizes and as each is just slightly bigger or smaller than the others it means you could do some manis with each nail having just incrementally bigger dots than the last. I would definatley recommend them and would have been really pleased if I had bought them myself. 

So I'm really happy with the 2 products I've tried from Born Pretty. Like the polish I tried previously I think these tools are really high quality, especially for the price!

Photoshop me out of your life!

Claire is currently working on some product photos for our store using photoshop (I'm a model! *preen preen*), just brightening them up and correcting any colour shifts and things. I started wondering about what could be done to my appearance using retouching.

Just in case you were wondering, I never use any sort of photo editing on my blog (well other than cropping and correcting the colour when the stupid camera decides to put a blue filter on everything) I don't even know how to use photoshop for those things. 

I am not completely adverse to using photoshop, I understand why it's used on adverts and for artistic reasons. I would do it myself to get rid of small things like pimples if I could be bothered but I am far too lazy for any of that. What I don't like is when photoshop is used as a lie. By which I mean when it is used so excessively that you can't tell what is what anymore. Take the recent ban on those 2 foundation adverts in the UK, while I'm not going to underestimate the general public like the Advertising standards comittee and say that they might believe the foundation being sold could give them the flawless mannequin skin of Julia Roberts airbrushed face, but I do agree it is decieving because they are selling a product and basically faking the results. While people may not fall for it (hopefully) it's still not good business. And the same goes for Beauty blogs in my opinion. I have no problem whatsoever with people using photoshop to iron out minor flaws, or if you're trying to show off an eye or lip colour I don't see a problem working on your face. But if you're trying to review a foundation it's just not fair to airbrush your face, or to brighten a colour or anything that significantly changes the results of a product.

So I decided to get Claire to go to work on me. She probably could have changed me more but we wanted it to look realistic. Like me but better. Have a look!

 I'm not sure about how I feel about them, I find it very odd!  It's fun to see the 'perfected' me but I certainly wouldn't want all my photos to have this treatment done to them. I think I'd find it very depressing. I don't have very much confidence in how I look but I certainly don't think I need to change myself before sharing pictures. I'm much happier showing the real me. And at least that way I know compliments aren't stemming from a false image of me.

The other day I went to Primark, which I have a serious love/hate relationship with. I love the prices and a lot of the stock but loathe the shop itself. For me it is like Hell on Earth! I got very panicky but had both Claire and my sister with me so managed to get through the shop and pick up some bits. I couldn't actually find any clothes I liked the look of (Claire and I had seen some lovely stuff from the A/W collection but I get it's not out yet, or at least the shop we were at didn't have any of it) but I picked up some knickers and tights and things. And also this fabulous straw boater for £2!

I really, really love it. However with the boater and my hair being a sandy-ish colour at the moment I sort of remind myself of Tommy Steele from Half a Sixpence:

I love freckles. I have some myself but they're mainly solar-activated (seriously, they come out when I'm in the sun and then disappear) and light. When I wear foundation to covere up my redness and stuff it hides them even more. So I've taken to drawing them on. Does it look remotely realistic at all? :P

Neon Nails

So in my little haul the other week I got a set of Starry Temptress Color Club polishes from TK Maxx.

These are all neons with glitter added, a fabulous idea that you'd think would have been done a long time ago!  Oh and a glittery top coat as well.  

I found the polishes to be very thick which meant application was a little difficult s they were kind of gloopy. However once on the thickness sort of helped and they were fully opaque in two coats. They also dried quickly nd looked smooth when they were dry. This is my first real taste of Color Club (I only have one other polish from the brand) and I don't know if the thickness is a trait, or if it's just this collection or if my set is just a bit old or something. I need to buy some polish thinner anyway so when I do I'll add a drop in these and see if it helps.

Firstly I did a manicure alternating my nails between the green (Glitter Envy) and the brighter, hotter pink (Ultra Astral)

     

In the bottles the glitter looks holographic, like theres all colours of glitter shimmering in there. However on the nail it all look sort of the same colour and not really... sparkly?  It's hard to desribe. The glitter in the green polish looks sort of gold and in the hot pink it looks blue. I would prefer it to look the way it does in the bottle but it's still kind of cool.

Then I added a layer of the top coat

Now it's more sparkly! :D The top coat is clear with multicoloured glitter, on the nail it looks mostly like a mix of blue and yellowy/orange glitters but every so often you see a little flash of a different colour as well.

I wore this a couple of days and then got a chip (I only got the one chip the whole time I wore this polish, about 4 days) on the tip of one of my index fingers so I decided to go super ridiculous.

  

Aww yeah. I added french tips using the bright orange (You Got Soul-ar) and blue (Otherworldly).

Super ludicrous and bright but due to both my terrible application and the thick polish the tips look super lumpy. 

I really like these. Again I would prefer them to have the glitter shine through on the nails as it does in the bottle, but the colours are still really cool and I've never seen a glittery neon creme before.

I'm really into nail polish at the moment. I get bored every few days and have to change whats on my tips regardless of how it's wearing. Do you do that or do you keep your polish on as long as it looks good?

Possible hiatus

Hi everyone

Nothing is certain but I have a feeling I may not be around very much in the next few days. 

My tribunal is on tuesday morning and I'm absolutely terrified. I don't even have to go myself but it's still so so scary. If I lose it I'm not even sure what to do as I am not well enough to go on JSA. Please wish me luck. 

I'm also not feeling very well at the moment. My doctor and I decided to swap my medication so at the moment I'm slowly lowering the dose of my current medicine so I can try something new when it's out of my system. Being on this lower dose makes me feel very low and exhausted.

There's also a lot of drama going on in a corner of the beauty blogger/indie makeup world that I am connected to. At the moment I just am not up to dealing with it though so I'm not going to go into it. I'm sticking my head in the sand and hope by the time I come up for air it will all have stopped.

If I win my tribunal I'll probably come back to posting pretty quickly in celebratory happiness, but if I lose I will probably be very depressed and might want to take a week or two to cheer up.

I shall spend the time until my return gorging myself on Vegetarian Percy Pigs and watching Judge Judy woo hoo!

NOTD - Hot Lava

These nails were Pixie A La Mode's idea and turned out to be one of the prettiest manicures I've ever done! It's meant to look like molten magma, I think it's quite effective! 

  

 

To do this I started with a base of 2 coats of Barry M Tangerine (which is a shimmery bright orange) then when that dried I added a large drop of Models Own 25 Karat Gold polish (shimmery gold) and a large drop of a shimmery bright red polish (it's a really old one from Icing with no name) and swirled them together using a tiny dotting tool. When that was all dry I added a coat of black crackle (I used Barry M Nail Effects). 

I think it looked gorgeous! Because the black crackle is matte on top of the shimmery red and golds it really looks like the drying surface of magma. Fantastic idea Pixie :D

Style Icons - Gary Le Strange

When asked what 'style' or 'look' I have I'm always a bit confused as to how to describe it. I'm very eclectic, from day to day I will dress in completely different ways and mix and match styles so I really don't know what I would be considered in terms of fashion subcultures. There's always an overriding sense of bright, patterned, messiness to my look though, so i've taken to describing my fashion sense as the offspring of a clown, an 80s pop star and a scarecrow.

Well suddenly yesterday it dawned on me. I'm just a female Gary Le Strange! 

Gary is a character created by the comedian Waen Shepherd (who you may have seen playing a paedophile in The Inbetweeners). Like the love child of David Bowie, Steve Strange, Adam Ant and basically every other 80s New Romantic but without the same levels of talent and intelligence. He's a ludicrous, childish wannabe Art Pop Star, every thought of his is crammed full of pretention and crazy arty bollocks and confusion.

 

His songs are meant to be silly and shallow and they are, however they're really fun and beautifully written. I think it takes a lot of talent to write something so deliberately poor without it being too obviously a parody. 

With his fluffy dragged-through-a-hedge-backwards hair, poorly applied over-the-top makeup and clothes a bit like Lady Gaga but without the budget he really could be my twin. Also we kind of have the same figure.

You may be thinking 'Oh Lillian you so self deprecating!' but no. Yesterday when I was looking for pictures for this post my girlfriend (without knowing what I was planning on writing) pointed at Gary and said 'You see that? That's you that is!' so it's clearly not just in my head.

  

And to be honest I'm quite pleased. If I'm going to be compared to someone I'm quite happy for it to be Gary. There's a charming naivety about him and his determination to be as uncommercial as possible while still longing to be loved by everyone. I like the way he dresses, he has a lot of the same inspirations as me, he just takes things a step further (well a step further than I do now, I used to go around in a tricorn hat and frock coat pretending to be Adam Ant) and has more confidence and less self deprecation. Gary thinks he is the greatest and everyone who disagrees is a moron but please don't come and have a go because he is not hard enough.

So long live the Byronic Lord of Pop!

Funk to Funky

Last saturday was David Bowie at a club I like. Claire and I decided to go.I hadn't been out dancing in a long long time and the first time in about 6 months I'd been and not had a panic attack on the way there. Hooray! It was actually quite nice and empty with lots of room for dancing. I had lots of fun.

I decided I of course had to do Bowie makeup, originally I wanted to do that weird gold-forehead-circle thing but didn't have time to come up with a good outfit so decided to be Pierrot Bowie like at the last Bowie night. This time though I tried to actually replicate the makep from the Ashes to Ashes video as best I could.

I thought I did quite a good job but sadly my round face and squashed strawberry looking nose just can't pull it off like Bowie and his cocaine chiselled cheekbones :(

 

Here I am doing my bet Klaus Nomi face. I hope my figure looks nicer in real life!

I have made a facebook page for my blog. It seemed like a good idea a few hours ago. There's a little box in my sidebar with the link. Please 'like' if you wish, at the moment I'm Lillian no mates!

It's been a funny few days!

Last week everything was as normal and then bam panic on the streets of London! (and Birmingham and now Manchester and other places!)
Being (relatively) young I've never experienced anything like this before, it was very frightening. Not that I thought anything would happen to me (I live in a very middle class area away from Wimbledon town centre so I wasn't really at much of a risk) but just because it's a really horrible situation to be in. I have friends who could have been in danger (thankfully everyone is ok), two of them could see burning buildings and the gangs from their windows. It also spread closer and closer to home, hitting Colliers Wood on monday evening and then yesterday the shops in Wimbledon were evacuated by the police as a precaution. Yes, the extent of the rioting in Wimbledon was a single bin set on fire but it's just weird to know that your local town is actually being evacuated and protected by police.
The whole thing is scary and senseless and just appalling.

However the thing that has struck me most about the whole situation is just how much it brings out the best and the worst of people. And I don't just mean the obvious looting/community spirit. I've seen some people become hideously right-wing and been reacted to in a hostile manner because I can empathise with the kids doing these things. Does that mean I agree with them? No, obviously not. What they're doing is hideous and criminal and wrong and they need to be punished. However I just don't believe that people just suddenly decide to go out looting for fun, something happened to make it start, there was a catalyst and things need to be done by the government to make sure this doesn't happen again. And by that I don't mean 'shoot the hoodies' as I've seen people suggesting. When people have everything taken away from them it's inevitable that they're going to strike out. Of course that doesn't make it right, but it's happened before (hello 70s and 80s!) and will happen again if nothing changes to make things better for the people living below the breadline.

However I have also been so moved by peoples love and kindness. The people who have banded together to clean up their communities are so so amazing and I wish I could have helped. And so many people have just so supportive. Thank you so much to everyone who has emailed/tweeted/facebooked me checking that my family and I are ok. It's really so touching to know that people care. And I know it's not just for me, I've seen wonderful spirit all over where people are banding together and sending their love and wishes and prayers to people they've never met and  probably never will. It's amazing and wonderful and makes me feel very sappy.

London

Just hoping that everyone in London (and Birmingham) is fine. It's all very scary and depressing. My town is currently safe and I'm sure it will remain that way.

Haulage

 Last week I decided to leave the house on my own (apart from to walk the dogs or go to my sisters house) for the first time in about 5 months (probably, I cant remember). Scary! I was all shaky and very anxious and didn't stay out long at all, but I did it! Hooray. Go me. So I treated myself to a haul, which I shall now share.

Blog Sale Update

I also just wanted to say thank you to everyone who bought something from me. The money raised so far has bought Claire and I a special photography lightbox to help take professional looking product photos and some samples. We're now ready to order our first lot of stock and are so excited! We should have our shop running by the beginning of September!

I still have lots of stuff left that I want out of my house so I have lowered a lot of prices. I've also changed the rules slightly because including the shipping in my prices ended up confusing some people

I liked the colours for this, and my skin looks flawless, the huge scabby spot I had is barely visible (thank you Skin Base!) but the blending out of my eyeshadow is appalling. Le sigh. I really need to learn how to blend!

Makeup Heroes Number 3

Hi everyone. I think everyone has their third video up for the Makeup Heroes now you can see them all on our channel :) I've been slacking terribly and so this one is late and I'm late for the next one. Baaad me. Anyway here is mine:



However after making the video I have experiences some problem with High Voltage's customer service and sadly I would no longer count them among my favourites. I still stand by what I said about the products, a lot of what I've bought is fabulous and I love them. However because of the problems I have I will no longer be buying from them, and while I would recommend the products in a heartbeat I'm unsure if I would recommend the brand as a whole. My experience has left me feeling very sad and disappointed. I wish Jasmine the best and hope everyone who continues to buy from her has everything go well and likes the products as much as I do.

Models Own Lip Balm Review

I'll just come right out and say it, this review is going to be hideously gushing as this is one of the best lip products I've ever tried. I LOOOOVE it. I actually tried a self imposed boycott of Models Own for a while last year after a big sale fail and then someone from their facebook page nicking photos from my blog without asking or crediting me but then I tried this and was just like '...ok well as a brand they may suck but their products rule!'

So why do I love this so much? Well it's fully opaque with the shine of a gloss, smells like delicious fruity candy, lasts for hours, moisturises my lips as well as a non coloured balm and feels like I'm just wearing a light layer of balm. IT'S JUST AMAZING!

  

As you can see it comes in a little pot (which either weigh 6g full or hold 6g of product. I'm not sure.) The balm itself is like... a paste I guess! It's not as hard as your average lip balm in a tube but not as liquid as a gloss. It's really easy to spread over your lips and looks smooth and even. And my god are the 3 I own pigmented!

Red Hot - bright bold red. Smells like strawberry candy.

 

Tangerine - Reddish coral. Smells like orange candy.

 

Fuschia-Full. Shimmering bright fuschia. Smells like raspberry candy.

 

I wanted to test out their longevity so worn it for a while and took photos at intervals.

Here is Fuschia-Full after about an hour, during which time I drank a pint of water and ate something:

  

IT'S EXACTLY THE SAME!

Here it is after about 4 hours. There was more drinking, eating and at one point I completely smudge it accidentally with my hand. 

 

It has now faded quite a lot but it's an even, sheer pink now, no patchiness or smudging.

While wearing these It just feels like I've applied a thickish layer of normal lip balm, they're not at all sticky or heavy or gloopy feeling. After I remove it my lips feel really softened and supple.

Any cons? Well if you just wanted a slightly tinted lip balm this obviously isn't for you (though there is a clear shade and a light pink that might be suitable), there are only 6 colours available at the moment and some people might not like applying from the pot. Personally I have no problem with the packaging, I use a lip brush to apply it so I don't get messy fingers and because of the consistency I really can't think how else they could package it. Some people also may dislike the fragrances (though those people would be crazy as they smell delicious!) but you can only really smell it when you first apply (or if you stick your nose in the pot to sniff it like I do :P) Other than that I don't see how anyone could dislike it. It's just... lovely! These are usually £5 from Models Own but I think I picked them up in a sale on Asos for about £3 each. Obviously I'm glad I paid less than asking price but I definately think they're worth the full price.

Modern Retro look

Ugh see, my attempts at creative names for my looks are cringe-worthy! The title came from the fact that  this look somehow reminded me of the 50s. I think it's the minty green and orangey-red, the combination is just invocative of 50s design. Or also it's a bit like something an old victorian whore might wear :P pale face, bright red lips, shoddily applied bright green eyeshadow, rouged cheeks...See what I mean? :P And it's modern because of the contrasting sparkle in the shadow and the glossiness of the lips. Or something.

I really liked this makeup and think I could have looked quite pretty if I didn't have hideous unwashed hair and dirty pyjamas on :P
