Snail Slime

Hi there. I've been recently getting really interested in trying some products that contain snail slime. It could of course be just a gimmick but apparently the mucus of a certain species' of snails contains loads of skin loving ingredients like allantoin and glycolic acid so I feel it could be worth a try. Now loads of people will probably find the idea of putting something that comes from a snail on your skin kind of disgusting, and that's fair enough, but I am not one of them. I bloody love snails and in fact have had their slime on my face before.

Me around the age of 15/16 with some friends.

The problem is that I cannot tell if the slime is collected in a way that is cruelty-free. Obviously it is not vegan friendly and whether or not the actual product I might choose is cruelty-free depends on the company that makes it but I cannot work out if the actual slime is produced under cruel or painful conditions for the snail.   I’ve been trying to research about it but I can’t really find a straight answer. It seems to be basically cruelty-free, the snails aren’t killed or seriously hurt but I’ve heard they ‘agitate’ the snails which could hurt them a bit. Agitation isn't a very specific term, it could mean they are hurt or made uncomfortable but on the other hand it just might mean they are wiggled around a bit or something! If anyone knows more about it please, please let me know.

  1. Oh my god, you are braver than me. I think I'd scream with a snail on my face. Never heard of using their slime as a beauty treatment before, so I'm afraid I cannot helps.

  4. A dutch beautyblogger (worked in a pharmacist lab) wrote a big piece about it, i think google translate will work: http://www.beautylab.nl/beautyingredient-slakkenslijm/

Basically she writes that allatoin is the most important ingredient in snail slime, and that allatoin can be derived from plants as well. Vegetable allatoin is cheaper and easier to produce and cruelty free, so you'll notice that most snail creams also contain added vegetable allatoin. Some contain very little snail slime and some even none at all, only using the name for marketting purposes. But they're just as good, if the rest of the ingredients is good too :)

And I don't mind snails, but would never touch them. I lived in a house in the woods for a while and huuuge 15cm slugs would crawl under our door and be all over the kitchen in the morning. Still gives me the creeps when I think of it XD

  7. I actually use glycolic acid in my face cleanser. It seems to be the only thing that keeps my face totally clean. It's just an awesome ingredient. If snails give you some organic form of that, go for it...

  13. I'm not really sure how this has gone for you (being an old article and stuff) but I just want to point out that (at least for some people) you should be careful and test any snail-slime product (likely even if it's vegetable-derived) on a small area before applying freely. I, too, used to love holding snails and letting them crawl on me, until one day I had to stop as when I let them crawl, the slime-trails started 'burning'/irritating my skin, as if I'd suddenly developed skin sensitivity to them - it happened suddenly and with no warning, after many happy childhood years of snail-holding. :(
